Microsoft first announced the Windows 10 May Update in the beginning of April , promising to let it bake in the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider Program for a full month before releasing it in late May.

There are no issues listed as resolved. Some of these issues are more notable than others, and some won’t be fixed. Windows 10 version has been serviced several times while sitting in the Release Preview ring, so it’s in much better shape than previous feature updates. It will continue to be serviced at least once a month for 18 months. Here are the issues listed as ‘investigating’: Display brightness may not respond to adjustments Microsoft and Intel have identified a driver compatibility issue on devices configured with certain Intel drivers.

Duplicate folders and documents showing in user profile directory If known folders e. Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders are redirected, an empty folder with that same name may be created.

Audio not working with Dolby Atmos headphones and home theater Users may experience audio loss with Dolby Atmos headphones or Dolby Atmos home theater. There are the issues that are listed as ‘mitigated’: Intel Audio displays an intcdaud. Unable to discover or connect to Bluetooth devices Microsoft has identified compatibility issues with some versions of Realtek and Qualcomm Bluetooth radio drivers. Night light settings do not apply in some cases Microsoft has identified some scenarios where night light settings may stop working.

According to Microsoft is an error that may appear on devices that changed the system language during the upgrade process to version Although Microsoft aims to offer the best possible upgrade experience, the process to build a new version of Windows 10 that is compatible with countless hardware and software configurations is difficult, and it can result in many unexpected problems during and after the installation.

However, it doesn’t mean that you should never upgrade your device, as new releases bring new features, fixes, and usually improve many security aspects. If you plan the installation properly, the chances of running into issues and errors will be significantly lower.

Below we share several tips to minimize the impact as you try to install the May Update on your computer. A full backup is your best friend when installing a new version of Windows While the setup process has a mechanism to restore the previous version in case something goes wrong during the upgrade process, there’s always a chance of something unexpected will happen.

Case and point, during the October Update rollout, Microsoft was forced to halt the deployment of the update due to a number of bugs, including a problem that caused data loss to a small number of users. Instead of rushing into clicking the Install button, you should use the built-in imaging tool to create a temporary backup , which you can then use to recover your system if you run into problems after installing the May Update.

Or you should at least backup your personal files to an external drive or to the cloud using OneDrive. If you’re using custom system settings, there’s a chance that one of the settings is blocking your computer from getting the Windows 10 May Update. To check and undo system settings that may prevent your device from downloading the new update, use these steps:.

Once you complete the steps, the May Update should now be able to download and install automatically. Usually, an upgrade will fail as a result of compatibility issues with outdated or poorly designed applications.

If you want to reduce the chances of problems during the installation of the May Update, make sure to remove apps that are likely to cause problems, such as old classic programs and third-party antivirus.

In addition to old programs, you may want to consider temporarily uninstalling third-party security software, such as antivirus, firewall, and others. After installing the feature update, you can reinstall them back. Although the risks of leaving your device unprotected during the upgrade process are relatively low, it’s assumed that you understand the consequences that it’s never recommended to leave your computer without protection.

You should consult your security software vendor for specific instructions. If you’re dealing with the Windows Defender Antivirus, you can disable the real-time protection feature using these steps:. After you complete the steps, the real-time protection will re-enable automatically after the upgrade.

A lot of times, the installation for a new version of Windows 10 will fail because of compatibility problems with one or multiple peripherals connected to your device. You can reduce the number of problems by disconnecting all non-essential peripherals before clicking the Install button.

The devices that you want to unplug, include removable storage such as USB flash drive, SD cards, external hard drives , printers, scanners, dongles, and Bluetooth peripherals. When preparing to upgrade to the May Update, you only need a mouse, keyboard, monitor, and an internet connection. After the installation, you can reconnect all the peripherals to your system. A network connection set as a metered to data will block version from downloading and installing automatically. If you want to upgrade your system to the latest feature update, you have to disable any network connection set as metered.

If you’re using a limited internet connection, make sure there’s enough data left before removing the configuration or make sure to switch to a network connection that isn’t capped before proceeding. After completing the steps, use Windows Update to download and install the new feature update on your device. Sometimes the Windows 10 or third-party firewall can come between your device and the feature update causing errors and other problems.

If you’re using a firewall, make sure to disable it before proceeding with the installation. However, if you’re using the Windows Firewall, you can use these steps to disable the feature:. Once you complete the steps, your device should be able to download the upgrade files without issues.

If you’ve followed all our recommendations, and you’re still unable to install Windows 10 version , then you should consider performing a clean installation.

When you use a clean installation, you’ll erasing everything and installing a fresh copy of Windows 10 with the latest feature update, which can help to resolve performance and many other issues. If you want to try a clean installation, you should use the Media Creation Tool to create a USB media, which you can use to boot your computer and complete the setup.

You can find all the steps to perform this task in this guide. While the first semi-annual update for Windows 10 is now rolling out to compatible devices with new features and improvements, remember that when a major release becomes available at least during the early days unknown bugs and compatibility issues are expected. If you’re planning to install version immediately after the official launch, before rushing into the process, keep in mind that Microsoft always recommends waiting until the update downloads to your device automatically.

The reason is that using Windows Update, the company can more accurately scan and detect if your configuration is compatible with the new feature update, which can save you a lot of headaches. Did you come across any problems installing version ? If so, how did you fix the issue? Let us know in the comments. But I’m also a bit of a hardware geek. These are some of the affordable gadgets on my desk today. I know mice, and this is the one I use every day. The MX Master is a wireless high-precision mouse that’s very comfortable to use and has many great features, including the ability to connect with multiple devices, an infinite scroll wheel, back and forward buttons, all of which you can customize. If you spend a lot of time typing, your palms and mouse will leave tracks on your desk.

My solution was to start using gaming mouse pads, which are big enough for you to use the keyboard and the mouse comfortably. This is the one I use and recommend. You could just use a regular light bulb in your office, but if you want to add some ambient lighting with different colors, an RGB LED strip is the way to go. This one is Mauro-approved.

Why didn’t I think of this first. Btw, Night Light won’t work if I disable or enable it after startup. Could also be related to the virtual networking used for Hyper-V Total network usage is still correct in the graph on the Performance tab. Still no sign of the update.

The Xbox app was updated to a new console companion app. The app then explained the update and told me to update to for the new version of the Xbox app. Doesn’t help when the update is still being held in limbo. I guess that’s good given the disaster that turned out to be. Heads up: On the first error “This PC cannot be upgraded It is called “Battleye” and it will be somewhere in your Steam directory.

The service is called BEservice. Delete both of these. After that I could update. I had the start menu problem during one of my insider build updates. Did the trick for me. I haven’t run into any issues, fortunately. It’s been a solid update. I updated without a problem except that it takes hrs for it to complete the whole process. It was really slow but it was worth waiting!

I used Windows 10 assistant update. The good news for me is that my pc is now working well and runs smoother too. Anything l clicked, opens once without dragging or waiting time. My pc is made up of 2gb ram, gb rom.

You should update your hdd, not windows. I have hit check for updates 30 times on 3 PCs and never got the update. I finally put one on Release Preview and recieved it. I dont know whats wrong with this update, it messed up my windows hello sign in on my surface pro I have had this issue since I updated. I thought maybe I had to restart the machine. Maybe try disabling Hello and then redoing it? Yep, that seemed to work for me. Make sure you completely remove the facial data and redo it.

Spoke too soon Well, it helps it by allowing it to eventually work, but it still takes a while. Hopefully they will patch this. There is a reg fix for the sandbox mode. Once of the cumulative updates details said fix. I did a clean install on the first day was released. Have had no problems with the new version except for Night Light which is solved by signing out then in again.

The problem still exists after the late May Cumulative Update. Night Light had the same problem on too. Am I the only one annoyed by the recent downloads view they gave the “Downloads” folder? I’m not some idiotic newb who constantly forgets what ever the hell I downloaded off of the internet and needs constant reminding whatever they were and when I downloaded them :. I read somewhere that this update takes 32 GB of working space and then it will reserve space for future updates.

I have a 64 GB Surface Go where that might be an issue. Are these things still true? It’s not that bad. Pity the poor chumps with 32GB devices. Dell is trying to unload them on suckers looking for a super special bargoon on those 32GB shelfware old stock devices.

But apparently they only do the reserve if there is “enough” free space, what ever that means. Just installed on a 32 gb Acer laptop without any problems. Still have 9 gigs left When I tried to do it in office, I get the update cannot be installed problem on the Intel Compute Sticks.

Turns out needs minimum 32GB storage and probably 10GB of available space to install. These means lower-end PCs are stuck on According to a discussion on Reddit and another, I started on the Adobe Forums myself, this problem is no singled out case and something that needs to be addressed by whoever is responsible – Strangely enough this bug, while the OS Update being provided from Microsoft, only appears to affect Adobe Products Photoshop, Premier, Illustrator, etc My wife and I have bog standard Lenovo and HP laptops.

Both have remained standard with only Office home installed. Both failed to install the new May update. Both took almost 2 hours in Preparing phase, another two hours in downloading and finally, started to install but then crashed. Even stuffed our Outlook accounts and rejected passwords that previously worked. Is MS actually trying to drive users into the arms of the Google devil?

The updated were noneventful, but, all four seem to be plagued by frequent slow shutdowns and having Microsoft Office programs Excel or Word activate all by themselves without being requested by users when starting the devices. When shutting down, something seems to be hanging during the log off phase.

The physical power down is always quick. The “missing update”, even when manual update triggered is probably due to as you said, their pre update checking to “more aggressively block devices known to come across issues with the new version”. It is working for me, I updated my Surface Laptop and have not notice any issues yet. It is running even smoother luckily. However my desktop machine which is a Dell was having the “is not ready issue”, after dell delivered a firmware update I successfully downloaded and install the upgrade.

No issues so far. Thank GOD! Go to Windows 10 sub-reddit and you’ll find a ” Update Mega-Thread” filled with complaints of latency spikes, sound not working, infinite boot loops, now taking an additional 10 seconds to boot etc. How about F this site? If I could game on Linux I would have dropped Microshaft a long time ago. Yes No. Thank you! Any more feedback? The more you tell us the more we can help.

Can you help us improve? Resolved my issue. Clear instructions. Easy to follow. No jargon. Pictures helped. Didn’t match my screen.
